Boards & Authorities
The City Council has created several boards, authorities, and commissions to serve in an advisory capacity to Council. Board and commission members have the opportunity to provide input on the policies that govern the city. North Carolina state law requires certain boards such as the Board of Adjustment.
Apply to Serve
Board, authority, and commission vacancies occur on a regular basis. Generally, the Mayor or Council are responsible for appointing people to serve on those City boards.
The Mayor reviews applications when vacancies arise, and asks the most qualified candidate to serve. The Mayor announces candidate recommendations during Council meetings at least two weeks before of the official appointment. After a recommendation from the Mayor, City Council will vote to approve or reject appointments to boards.
If you are interested in serving, download an application (PDF) and submit it to the City Clerk.
