Two Lenoir Parks & Recreation teams win tourneys

The Lenoir Rockies 10U baseball team and the Lenoir Blue Hurricanes 10U softball team recently won their respective championship games in the Foothills Athletic Association summer tournaments.

The Blue Hurricanes beat the Granite Falls Bruins 10 to 5 during their championship game held Thursday June 16, 2022, in Morganton. The Rockies beat the formerly undefeated Sawmills Reapers 7 to 3 during their championship game the same day at the Mulberry Recreation Center here in Lenoir.

"We are very proud of all of our teams this season, and we are thrilled to have won two championships this year," Lenoir Parks and Recreation Athletic Director Katelin Cooke Harmon said. "The Foothills Athletic Association (FAA) had a very successful league this year, and the players and parents had a great time."

The FAA includes recreation department teams from Lenoir, Hudson, Sawmills, Granite Falls, Valdese, and Morganton. The teams are sponsored by their local municipalities and partners and they play at the various recreation centers and fields in each town.

The City of Lenoir Parks & Recreation Department fielded seven baseball teams, three softball teams, and four co-ed t-ball teams this year. More than 150 children ages four to 13 played in the league. The season opened April 30 and finished June 16.

"Be on the lookout for announcements about fall baseball, which will start in late August," Harmon said. "We will start taking registrations around mid-July."
