City staff are hosting lifeguard classes, swimming lessons, and kayaking practice at the Lenoir Aquatic & Fitness Center in February. Recreational swim is increasing next month, too.
Swimming lessons are available for four to 12 year olds starting in February and going through April.
Swimming lessons are six days spread over two weeks, Tuesday through Thursday each week. Daily lessons last a minimum of 30 minutes. Staff use the American Red Cross curriculum. Swimmers must register in person at the Lenoir Aquatic & Fitness Center. The cost is $20.00 for members, $30.00 for City residents, and $50.00 for non-City residents. Kayaking practice will be available at the indoor pool on Mondays starting Feb. 6. Kayakers can bring their kayaks and gear to the LAFC and practice rolls and other skills from 5:30 to 7:00 pm before hitting the open waters in the summer.
Kayaking practice is open to adults and youth and participants must bring their own kayak. This is not an instructor led course. Recreational swim is increasing in February. In addition to the first and third Saturdays, the indoor pool will be open for recreational swim every Friday starting Feb. 17 from 1:00 to 6:00 pm. The cost is $5.00 a day for adults, $3.00 a day for children and seniors, and $2.00 a day for disabled persons. LAFC staff will host a Lifeguard Certification Class Feb. 24-26. Students who complete the course may be offered employment with the Lenoir Aquatic and Fitness Center.
The course is held over three days at the center. Students must be at least 15 years old and complete a pretest before taking the Lifeguard Certification Class. Students must be able to swim 300 yards non-stop, tread water for two minutes with legs only, and complete a submerged 10 pound brick test. Girls must wear a one piece swimsuit. The cost for the class is $75.00 for City residents and $100.00 for non-City residents. For more information about certification, click the following link, Lifeguard Class.
